How Much Does Custom Jewelry Cost at Wholesale? The OEM Numbers

Stainless steel jewelry components during custom production

Quick answer: for stainless steel fashion jewelry made to order (OEM), the unit price is set by four things — material grade, finish, design complexity and run size — and a serious quotation states that unit price in writing at your exact quantity. Here, OEM production in 316 or 316L stainless steel starts at 50 pieces per design (30 for returning customers), and production typically takes 10-15 working days after the specification is approved. There is no honest universal price per piece, but the cost structure below tells you what moves the number and by how much.

What actually sets the unit price

1. Material grade. 316L costs more than 304 as raw material, and both are quoted per design. If the grade matters to your customers, name it in the brief and require it in the written quote — here is what 316L does and does not guarantee.

2. Finish. PVD coating (gold, rose gold, black) adds a vacuum-deposition step and costs more than standard electroplating, but wears far better — for resale stock it usually repays itself in fewer complaints.

3. Complexity. Stone setting, enamel fill, mixed finishes and moving parts each add labour steps. A plain polished band and a pavé-set hinged hoop are different products on the costing sheet even at the same weight.

4. Run size. Sampling and line setup are fixed costs. Spread over 50 pieces they are visible in the unit price; spread over 500 they almost disappear. This is why reorders — which skip the sampling round — are where custom economics get good.

The costs beyond the unit price

Budget for a paid sample round (and one iteration), your logo or packaging work if any, and international freight. Freight is knowable in advance: per-piece shipping on wholesale quantities runs well under a dollar to some markets and a few dollars to others — see the real per-country freight numbers in this sourcing breakdown, or quote your own cart at checkout before committing to anything.

How long does custom jewelry take?

Two clocks run in sequence. The sample round: typically one to two weeks including shipping, plus your approval time. Bulk production: typically 10-15 working days after the approved specification, confirmed per programme in the quotation rather than promised generically. A realistic first OEM project, brief to goods in hand, is therefore 4-7 weeks. Reorders are faster because sampling is skipped.

Custom run vs ready stock: the cost comparison that matters

As a reference point, ready-made stainless steel pieces here sell at public wholesale prices from $0.45 with a catalog median around $1.98 (end of August 2026, 770+ live styles). A custom 50-piece run of a comparable design will quote above the equivalent ready-stock price, because you are paying for exclusivity, sampling and setup across a small run. That premium shrinks as quantity grows.

When custom is the wrong answer

If the goal is simply your brand on proven styles, private label — existing designs with your packaging and cards — needs no tooling and smaller quantities; start with the private label route. And if you are still testing what sells, buy small from ready stock first: the styles that reorder are the ones worth customizing.
