Compare that with a plated finish, which is a fixed amount of material sitting on the surface: once it is worn through at a friction point, it does not come back.

The 316 family adds molybdenum to the chromium and nickel, which improves resistance to pitting from chlorides specifically, meaning salt and pool water. It is a meaningful advantage, not immunity, and the sensible way to describe it is as better resistance rather than as being proof against anything.

Worth saying plainly, because it sets the honest limit on every claim below: stainless means stains less, not stain-proof. Stainless steel is also not a nickel-free material. Nickel is part of the alloy in the 300 series, and low nickel release from a stable passive layer is a different thing from absence of nickel. Any supplier telling you their steel contains no nickel is describing something that does not exist.

What tarnish actually is, metal by metal

The colour was a finish, not the metal

By far the most common case. A gold-tone or black steel piece gets its shade from electroplating or a PVD coating, and that layer wears at the points where the piece rubs against skin, clothing or a desk. The customer sees steel showing through and reads it as tarnishing. The correct explanation is that the steel is fine and the finish has worn, which is normal for any coloured finish and depends on the process, the wearer and where the piece sits on the body. The piece is not the grade it was sold as

Lower-cost stainless grades exist, and some carry less chromium or no molybdenum, which makes them more prone to spotting in sweat and salt. If a piece marketed as 316 develops rust spots in ordinary wear, the grade claim is the thing to question, not the metallurgy. This is a sourcing failure rather than a material one, and it is the reason grade claims should attach to a specific SKU with source evidence behind them rather than to a catalogue as a slogan.

Only part of the piece is steel

Mixed construction catches people out constantly. A steel pendant can hang on a plated base-metal chain; a steel hoop can have a different alloy in the post or the hinge; clasps, jump rings and extender chains are frequently sourced separately from the body of the piece. When one component discolours and the rest does not, that is nearly always what has happened. Ask about components separately, because a piece is only as corrosion-resistant as its least resistant part.

It is a film on the surface, not a change in the metal

Soap residue, hand cream, hairspray and hard-water deposits build a dull film that reads as tarnish and comes off with warm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. If a gentle clean restores the piece completely, nothing was wrong with the material.

Where stainless steel genuinely can corrode

An honest guide has to include this section, because the absolute version of the claim is what gets retailers into arguments they cannot win. Stainless steel resists corrosion; it is not inert.

  • Chlorides. Swimming pool water, hot tubs and sea water attack the passive layer locally and can cause pitting, which shows up as small dark spots that do not polish out. The risk rises with concentration, temperature and time, so a hot tub is harder on a piece than a quick swim. The molybdenum in 316 helps here specifically.
  • Salt left to dry on the surface. The realistic damage case is not the swim, it is leaving a piece to dry with seawater still on it. Rinsing in fresh water and drying afterwards removes almost all of this risk.
  • Crevice corrosion. Liquid trapped where oxygen cannot reach, under a crimped connection, inside a stone setting or in the gap of a hinge, deprives the passive layer of the oxygen it needs to maintain itself. This is why an intricate piece needs drying more than a plain band does.
  • Harsh chemicals. Bleach and strong household cleaners will mark stainless steel. So will leaving pieces on during cleaning tasks, which is a more common cause than anything a customer does deliberately.

What a buyer can verify without a laboratory

Grade claims are the weak point in this category, and a proportionate sequence of checks answers most questions before anyone spends money on testing.

  • Ask what the claim attaches to. A catalogue-wide statement that everything is 316L and a per-SKU material declaration are not the same thing. Ask how the grade is established for the specific item you want to buy.
  • Ask what evidence sits behind it, and whether that document refers to the item or batch you are buying rather than to a generic material sample.
  • Buy a sample and wear it. Several weeks of ordinary wear, including sweat and showers, tells you more about a specific SKU than any description does, and it costs the price of one piece.
  • Test the components, not just the body. Wear-test the clasp, the ear post and the chain, since those are where problems concentrate.
  • Treat the magnet test with caution. The 300-series grades used in jewelry are typically non-magnetic or weakly magnetic, while some other stainless grades are strongly magnetic, so a magnet can occasionally flag a piece that is not what it claims to be. It cannot confirm that a piece is 316 rather than another 300-series grade, and cold working can make even austenitic steel slightly magnetic. Use it as a rough screen, never as proof.
